Abstract and presentation criteria

Instructions for posterwalk and oral presentations

The submitted abstracts will be reviewed by a professional jury and the authors of the accepted abstracts (clinical fundamental study) will be invited to present their work as an oral or poster presentation during the contests. The winner of these different competitions shall receive a reward! 

Within the poster presentation contest: case reports and clinical fundamental studies will be judged seperately and winners of each contest will receive a reward. 

Abstracts do not have to match the overall theme of the congress!

A. Criteria submission abstract

Clinical fundamental study

  • Deadline for submitting an abstract is set for 15th of August
  • Please note that your abstract has to be accepted in order for you to participate at the AMSC as an active participant! In case your abstract does not fulfill the requirements or the quality is not adequate, your abstract will not be accepted and we will inform you by email. In that case you can still participate as a passive participant instead. 
  • Our jury will review all abstracts and decide wether your abstract has been accepted or not. Authors of accepted abstracts will be asked to present their abstract as either an oral presentation or a poster presentation. Guidelines for oral presentations are listed below.
  • All abstracts must be written in English.
  • Please make sure abreviations are explained between brackets.
  • Structure of submitted abstracts: 
  1. Title: In upper case letters only.
  2. Introduction: Clearly state the aim of your work.
  3. Materials and methods: Describe the design of your scientific approach, including the materials used, the method and the statistical criteria applied.
  4. Results: State briefly the results of your study.
  5. Conclusion: Describe the outcome of your study in relation to the original aim of your study.
  6. Key Words: add 2-5 key words of your abstract.
  • Maximum number of words in your abstract is 300, everything included (except for references)

Case report

  • Deadline for submitting case report is set for 15th of August.
  • Please note that your case report has to be accepted in order for you to participate at the AMSC as an active participant! In case your case report does not fulfill the requirements or the quality is not adequate, your case report will not be accepted and we will inform you by email. In that case you can still participate as a passive participant instead. 
  • Unfortunately we can't organise a seperate competition for the three best case reports, therefore there will only be a posterwalk for the case report. This posterwalk is specifically for case reports only and will be judged seperately from the clinical fundament studies.
  • All case reports must be written in English.
  • Please make sure abreviations are explained between brackets.

  2. Introduction (patient info: initials, age, sex; signs and symptoms; physical exam modifications)
  3. Case history
  4. Investigations (pathologic changes ONLY)
  5. Treatment/Results
  6. Discussions/Differential Diagnosis
  7. References (minimum 3)
  8. Key Words
  • Maximum number of words in your abstract is 300, everything included (except for references).
     

B. Poster criteria

Clinical fundamental study

  • Structure
    1. Title: In upper case letters only.
    2. Introduction: Clearly state the aim of your work.

  • No abbreviations unless explained below in the poster
  • Use the portrait orientation
  • The maximum dimensions are 90cm width and 120cm height.
  • The title should be large enough to be seen at a distance of 3 m.
  • Make sure the structure is clear by using numbers or arrows.
  • Create a suitable contrast which makes it easier for the audience to read the text.
  • Don't write too much information on the poster, use illustrative objects (images, figures, graphs, charts, tables) instead.
  • Make sure there are no grammatical errors in the poster.
  • The font doens't necessarily have to be a specific lettertype.
  • There is no maximum number of words for the poster, however make sure it's readable from a distance.
  • We are offering a service of printing your poster. However you must send it to us at least 4 weeks prior to the start of AMSC. We do charge a reasonable fee, which still has to be set.

C. Poster presentation

Clincal fundamental studies

  • The presentation must be given in English. You ought to be present in time, and to follow the presentations of your collegues. 
  • The presentation may only take 5 minutes followed by 3 minutes discussion. Time limits will be strictly enforced. If the time limit is exceeded, there will be points deducted by the jury, as a penalty.
  • Do not speak too fast so the audience can follow.
  • Avoid repetitions and too complicated terms.
  • Try to focus on the main ideas of your research and illustrate these clearly.

Case reports

The presentation must be given in English. Be present at least 60 minutes prior start time, as we work in sessions.
The presentation may only take 5 minutes followed by 3 minutes discussion. Time limits will be strictly enforced. If the time limit is exceeded, there will be points deducted by the jury, as a penalty.

  • Do not speak too fast so the audience can follow.
  • Avoid repetitions and too complicated terms.
  • Try to focus on the main ideas of your research and illustrate these clearly.

 

D. Oral presentation

  • You can send in an abstract specifically for the oral presentations. Only upon selection of your abstract, you will be asked to give a powerpoint presentation regarding your subject.
  • The oral presentation may only take 10 minutes followed by 5 minutes discussion. Time limits will be strictly enforced. If the time limit is exceeded, there will be points deducted by the jury, as a penalty.
  • There is no maximum number of slides but keep in mind to stay within the provided 15 minutes.
  • Do not overfill your slides too much with text, try using illustrative objects.
  • Use enough contrast and an appropriate size (20-30) in your slides so the audience can read what it says.
  • Follow the structure above.
  • Avoid speaking too fast and watch your pronounciation
  • Avoid repetitions and too complicated terms.
  • Send the powerpoint (version no later than microsoft powerpoint 2010) to secretary@amsc.be before 01/09. Therefore we can test the powerpoint and send it back to the participant if any further adjustments are required.
  • Bring the powerpoint with you on a USB stick the day you have to present.
  • Presentations must be given in English.
